Wildfires fueled by high winds erupted on Crete, forcing the evacuation of more than 1,500 people from hotels and homes near Ierapetra, with further evacuations impacting up to 5,000 residents and tourists on multiple fronts. Around 230 firefighters, 10 helicopters, and ground teams are battling the blaze, which has damaged forests, olive groves, and homes.
