Chicago Considers Hotel Tax Hike to Boost Tourism Budget

Chicago’s City Council Finance Committee has backed a proposal to raise the hotel tax within a downtown Tourism Improvement District, potentially lifting the rate to 19%, among the highest in the nation. The measure, if approved by the full council, would add an extra 1.5 percentage points to the tax on large hotels that voluntarily participate and is expected to generate approximately $269 million over five years. Revenue would be directed to Choose Chicago, the city’s tourism and convention marketing agency, to help expand global promotional efforts and attract conventions and events.
